Discovering Tasmania

Whether you’re visiting the state or wanting to explore what’s in your backyard, navigate your way and expand your knowledge of Tassie gems with Tourism Tasmania’s iOS app.

There’s no doubt there is plenty to see and do in Tasmania. The island is a veritable treasure trove of cultural offerings, from upcoming exhibits at MONA, new restaurants offering all kinds of delicious cuisine and the best hiking trails dotted across sea and mountain landscapes – we are spoilt for choice.

The trouble, however, is finding out what is available and when.

If you’re like me and baulk at the idea of trying to decipher confusing paper maps or managing a messy pile of outdated travel pamphlets, your best bet is to get hold of a guide that integrates current information, events and navigation.

This is where the world of iOS and app downloads comes into play.

One of my favourites is Tourism Tasmania’s Discover Tasmania app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The free download is a handy, no-fuss virtual pocket travel guide for getting the most out of what the state has to offer.

First, head to Apple’s App Store via your iOS device or on your computer through iTunes, to download the app. Once installed, there are several menu options to help get you started.

Step 1: Launch and go

COPY: Tap the Discover Tasmania app icon on your mobile device to begin. The home interface will launch, offering you a number of options to explore, including main attractions, accommodation and maps to assist you in planning your route. Note: The app will ask if you want it to use your current location, using its GPS tracker. Allow this option if you’re keen on finding out about events and activities nearby.

Step 2: Instant attraction

COPY: Select the ‘Attractions’ button at the bottom of the app screen to view a category listing to choose from. This is a great feature to narrow your search for personal interests, like workshops, wine tasting, fine dining, entertainment and heritage sites. Tap on a category to view an alphabetical directory of relevant places and locations.

Step 3: Eventful offerings

COPY: If you’re interested in looking at upcoming events in particular regions of the state, tap the ‘Events’ button at the bottom of the screen. The app will take you to a map view of Tasmania with markers on locations where events are scheduled to be held. Tap any of these to view the name of the event. If you want to access further information, tap again on the link to read a description, dates and times.

TIP: Spend some time looking at information provided in the ‘Accommodation’ and ‘Maps’ sections of the app. This will be a great help if you want to plan trips away in advance, whether it involves an overnight stay at a recommended B&B, or a road map of how to get to where you want to go.

As the iOS market continues to expand, expect more Tasmanian-focused apps to hit the App Store in the coming year. Below are my top three picks worth checking out.
